Where do we PAT Test?

PAT TESTING ACROSS YORKSHIRE

Our clients are based all over West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire and range from large schools and corporations, requiring several thousand items to be tested, to mobile bars requiring just a few items. Whatever your requirements we guarantee to provide you with a comprehensive and professional service at a competitive price.

Education

We have a small portfolio of schools and nurseries that we currently look after, ranging from small primary schools to a nationally known private school. We fully understand that each school is unique and we tailor make plans and servicing times to suit their needs, ensuring minimal disruption.

The best time to do PAT testing for schools is during the holidays, So, Easter, Christmas and Summer or one of the half-terms. Schools are then empty of pupils and staff, making our job a lot easier; we can see everything that needs doing and are unlikely to miss anything, with items being returned at the end of term or tidied up for the holidays.

We also ensure that we set up clients on a retest period, based on the risk assessment of the premises; in most schools this means that all equipment used by children will need testing on an annual basis, but you can save money by getting office equipment tested less often. We put this in place automatically, and only change it back to annual if you instruct us to. You are of course the client so we do what you require.

Healthcare

Whether it’s a local Veterinary Practice or a Doctors or Dentists we are more than happy to provide a professional, comprehensive PAT testing service. Service is key within this busy sector and we ensure to keep disruption to a minimum.

We will come in at time to suit you, inspect your computers, fridges, IT equipment and other appliances that plug in, carry out any necessary repairs, including replacing 2-pin plugs for British 3-pins, so that when we leave, you will know that your equipment is safe.

You will be supplied with a comprehensive report including test results for each appliance tested. A list of appliances that have passed and a separate list of any that have failed and a PAT Test Certificate which will all be emailed to you as a PDF document, usually within 24 hours of the job completing.

Then, when your PAT tests are next due, we will contact you to remind you, suggesting a date to come in. Helping to take the stress out of keeping you compliant.

PAT testing medical equipment

Certain specialist medical equipment like defibrillators and heart monitors need specialist electrical testing. It is quite common for us to see these specialist devices being incorrectly PAT tested. The standards for these devices are very different and require different testing equipment and training. This means that the standards for testing of medical equipment are not being adhered to making this equipment potentially unsafe for use.

Facilities including; Doctors Surgeries, Veterinary Surgeries, Care Homes and Dentists use a variety of electrical equipment that must be tested to a medical standard. The equipment ranges from specialist medical, laboratory to IT equipment. Any electrical equipment used during or in the vicinity of the treatment, monitoring or diagnosis of a patient is classed as a medical electronic device e.g., beds, operating tables, infusion pumps, hoists, CPAPs, suction pumps, dentist chairs, heart rate monitor’s and also scales.

All medical devices are required to be labelled with the appropriate symbol(s) to identify their classification. If equipment has one of the following symbols, then it is classed as medical equipment.
Wharfedale PAT Testing
At Wharfedale PAT Testing we do not test appliances with these symbols but will discuss with you and make recommendations about their testing.

Offices

Offices are generally considered to be low risk environments and we recommend to our clients that they only need to get their PAT testing done every two years. A computer sat on a desk gets put there and generally stays there until it gets replaced, so the chances of it developing a fault are low. This can apply for other appliances in the office that never move, like the photocopier, printer, fridge, etc.

However, there are other appliances that are portable or moveable like kettles, toasters and vacuum cleaners; and don’t forget about laptop chargers that need at least a yearly visual check but that can be done by a member of staff.

Working from home

As an employer you have a duty of care to your staff, whether they work in the office, in the field or at home. So, when you’re getting the office PAT tested you need to consider getting the engineers equipment, that they keep in their vans, tested and the equipment used by staff in their homes checked.

We can work with you to visit all staff in their homes, to test their equipment, or you could ask them to bring their equipment into the office to be tested on a set date.

Hospitality

Places like cafes, restaurants, bars or pubs would come under several categories depending on the area the appliance is used in.

Items used in a kitchen would clearly come under commercial kitchen PAT testing but a number of kitchen items, like microwaves and hot cabinets, are often found in bar areas.

Where customers sit is different, especially if there are children around. There may be lamps to enhance the lighting or a TV on the wall. These aren’t appliances that the public would use in the sense of the IET guidelines, so it may be suitable to apply the shop PAT testing guidelines in this case.

Items that the public would use would be more applicable to vending machines, self-service coffee or soft-drinks machines, soup kettles or fruit machines. It can be common to have items with 3, 6, 12 and 24 month intervals all within a single business premises. Our recommendation is to do an initial full inspection and testing and then work out a follow up test date afterwards based on those findings.

Hotels and Guest Houses

Even the most modest Hotel or Guest House has many portable electronic devices in its public and service areas and in the guests’ rooms themselves. Keeping this equipment regularly checked and tested is crucial to keeping the hotel safe – preventing fire risk and risk of electric shock. Keeping the place running efficiently, ensuring that food can be prepared etc. and also in keeping the customer satisfied by ensuring that all available equipment for their use is working properly and not “out of order”.

In Hotel rooms we often find multiple appliances including TVs, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryers, irons, bedside and other lamps and possibly heaters and fans. In the public room’s equipment used by staff at the bar or in the restaurant such a coffee machines or glass washers need to be tested.

In receptions, offices and conference rooms the hotel will have computers and other office equipment. The restaurant will have items like food processors, toasters, blenders, knife sharpeners, mixers, which are used and moved during use or when cleaning. As well as wear and tear, food and liquid spillages, over-heating of equipment and pulling of wiring during movement are all possible sources of electrical devices becoming damaged.

Finally, guests expect Hotels to be immaculately clean. The devices used for this, vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, vax machines etc, work hard and are subject to being bashed about, pulled about and used to a point where they may overheat. If a hotel does its laundry of table linen, sheets, towels on site then clearly the machines which carry out washing, drying and pressing, whilst not of a portable nature still need to PAT tested.

Hairdressers and Beauty Salons

A large proportion of our work involves regularly testing local Barbers, Hairdressers and Beauty Salons both located in shops and mobile. These types of businesses use large numbers of handheld and portable items, which are classed as being the riskiest type and are generally used on a daily basis. Therefore, there is a high risk of damage, through wear and tear, getting wet or being dropped.

PAT Testing should be a necessary part of Health and Safety compliance in all Salons with a comprehensive record kept of testing and maintenance for each appliance. Ensuring customers and staff are safe from electrical harm.

Depending on the type of appliance, inspection and testing intervals can vary. As a rule, all handheld or portable appliances should undertake a visual inspection at least every 6 months, to check for signs or damage or excess wear. Larger items like washing machines can go longer between inspections. We recommend that a full inspection and testing takes place every 12 months whether it is mobile or not.

On completion you will be emailed a certificate and a detailed report of each item. The certificate acts as proof that the person responsible has taken steps necessary to ensure safety. The detailed report will highlight the pass or fails of each item.

Construction Sites

Building sites are quite harsh environments and being outdoors have to contend with additional environmental factors like dust, water and debris from general construction activities. This type of environment presents the highest risk of damage to portable appliances. It is for this reason that 110v appliances are used to reduce the risk of serious injury if an appliance were to develop a fault and cause a shock to a user.

At Wharfedale PAT testing we use the latest Seaward Apollo 500+ machines that are able to test 400v, 230v and 110v items.

We always recommend construction sites are checked every 3 months, even when appliances are 110v.
